Texas Catholic Letters

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Schmidt
Dallas, Texas

Dear Hal and Janet,

Thank you for asking about the ways The Catholic Foundation is helping our Catholic Schools. Support for education is one of the major uses of funds at the Foundation. Grants from both the unrestricted fund and donor advised funds account for thousands of dollars in support for the schools.

Scholarship funding has been the area of greatest interest, especially for the Urban and Inner City schools where the need for funding is greatest. Generally these schools are serving less affluent parish neighborhoods where financial assistance for tuition is a key factor in deciding if a child will attend the parish school. Just in the last few months several individuals committed to Catholic education have established donor advised funds at The Catholic Foundation for the specific purpose of providing financial assistance to the families of these students. In fact, one of the funds called “The Urban and Inner City Catholic Grade School Fund” will accept donations from anyone interested in supporting our catholic schools through scholarships. Donations can be made to The Catholic Foundation and they will be added to the fund. Additionally, the Foundation participates in a matching scholarship program with The Children’s Education Fund and we are assisting the donors in leveraging their gifts by seeking matching funding for their gifts also. The Catholic Foundation and its donor advised funds have accounted for over $200,000 in scholarships for the 2008-09 school year.

Hal and Janet, I hope this information is useful to you. Scholarship funding is always in demand and if you desire to help with scholarships The Catholic Foundation will look forward to assisting you.

Sincerely,

Edwin M. Schaffler
President and Chief Executive Officer
