Veteran Math Teacher From Bishop Lynch High School Latest Work of Heart Recipient

Mike Hall, a member of the Bishop Lynch High School math department, views teaching as a calling to serve and not work. An educator for 43 years, the past 13 at Bishop Lynch, he knows what he’s talking about.

And as the Match Success Center Coordinator at Bishop Lynch for the past six years, he loves to see students succeed.

“I get a tremendous thrill when students who have been struggling come to me excited when they have performed well on a test,” says Mike who is pictured with his wife and Michael George of The Catholic Foundation. “I see them growing in confidence, and math is no longer something that strikes fear in their hearts.”

The Math Success Center is a place where students can get extra help with math classes before and after school, and during study halls or Friar Seminar classes at no additional cost to them (unlike private tutoring).

Following are things a co-worker shared about Mike:

“Mike tutors everything from Algebra I to Calculus Ill and everything in between, a total of 20 different math courses offered at Bishop Lynch. The hours on our flyer that advertise the Math Success Center say 7:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., but Mike is always willing to stay past 5 p.m. when a student needs his help and wants to learn.

“This past quarter, Mike saw a total of 575 visitors, the highest first quarter of a school year on record. Last year, he averaged 550 students per quarter. Mike is an incredible team player and goes above and beyond to make sure that the students understand the math that is being taught.

“At Bishop Lynch, we often talk about the Road to Emmaus that we journey on together as a faculty and with the students. Mike embodies this idea so well, always being great company and an encourager, often sharing from his years of wisdom.”
